Laser-Assisted (FEMTOSECOND) Cataract Surgery

The most recent development in cataract surgery is Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (also known as FEMTOSECOND laser cataract surgery).

Here, a laser is used to replace several manual steps of the cataract surgery. The laser is used to accurately create the incisions into the wall of the eye (the cornea), create the capsulorrhexis (the initial cut into the cataract) and it also helps to break the cataract into tiny pieces. Once this is done, the remainder of the cataract operation is done using the traditional techniques.

Dr Johnson is an accredited FEMTOSECOND laser cataract surgeon and can perform this surgery for you.

Northern Eye Surgeons is committed to providing the highest quality and up to date surgery. However, we will only recommend treatments that are safe and shown to have the best outcomes. Currently, there is no evidence that FEMTOSECOND laser assisted cataract surgery is superior to traditional cataract surgery in any way. Additionally, as there is no medicare or health fund rebate for this technique, it significantly increases patients' costs with no significant benefit.

Dr Johnson's personal experience suggests that FEMTOSECOND laser cataract surgery is not better, or safer, than traditional cataract surgery. And it incurs additional costs. Therefore, whilst we can perform this technique for you, we usually counsel against it.
