Monitoring Macular Degeneration

Monitoring your macula is very important because early detection of wet macular degeneration should result in earlier treatment and therefore prevent of loss of sight.

Self monitoring is very simple. You can use an amsler grid (see below), tiles on the bathroom floor, venetian blinds or anything with a straight line.

Instructions on how to use an amsler grid;

  1. Wear your reading glasses and have plenty of light.
  2. Hold the grid as you would when reading a book.
  3. Cover one eye.
  4. Focus at the central dot on the grid with your other eye.
  5. Try to determine whether the lines of the grid are straight.
  6. Check with your other eye.

If the lines are distorted, or if there are new blind spots, you should contact your GP, optometrist or ophthalmologist, as you may have developed wet macular degeneration.
